     THE GILMORE FAMILY

SAMUEL GILMORE (1749 – 1800) was the son of John (b. 1710-20; d. 1775-
84 Cumberland Co.,N.C. and Jane Heard Gilmore.  His siblings were George,
Thomas, Isabell, Charles Heard, Humphrey, Uriah or Huriah, Stephen, Hugh,
and John, Jr.  (Some of these may have been cousins instead of siblings.)  The
Gilmores are first recorded in Lancaster, Pa., by 1746 they were in Abermarle
Co., VA. and  by the early 1750’s they were in Cumberland Co., N.C. as per
various land and deed records.

Jane Heard was the daughter of Charles Heard (b. @ 1695 Ireland; d. @ 1748
Abermarle Co.,VA.) and Isabella.  Charles Heard was in America by 1720 and
lived in Salisbury, Lancaster Co., Pa. in the 1730’s.  He is recorded as being a
blacksmith in Henrico Co.,Va. and was in Abermarle Co., VA by 1746.  Charles
and Isabella appear in court records in Abermarle Co. in March, 1748 with
witnesses Stephen Heard and John Gilmore.  Charles had four known children
and was probably married twice.  His known children were Charles, Jane,
Stephen, and John.  After John Gilmore died, it is believed that Jane Heard
Gilmore came with her children to Georgia as she received two land grants in
Burke Co., Ga in 1786 and 1788.

There was a very close connection between the Heards and Gilmores.  They
apparently traveled from Virginia to North Carolina to Georgia together.  There
are many, many marriages between Heards and Gilmores with the same given
names being carried down to each generation and Gilmore and Heard being
used as middle names.

I. SAMUEL GILMORE  b. March 22, 1748 in Cumberland, N.C.; d. March 18, 1800 in Montgomery Co. or Tattnall Co., Ga.  He was a tailor.  He was in the Wilkes Co., Ga. Court Records as early as 1783.  He was granted 250 acres in Wilkes Co. in 1784.   He lived at Clark’s Creek in Wilkes Co., Ga.  He was a Revolutionary War veteran and was living in Washington Co., Ga. in 1794.  When Montgomery and Tattnall counties were cut from Washington Co., his property was then apparently located in those counties.  He was married to ELIZABETH HEARD b. Oct. 2, 1756; d. July 18, 1838 in Henry Co., Ala.  It has been determined through much research by Heard and Gilmore researchers that Elizabeth Heard was the daughter of John Heard and Bridgett Carroll.  This John Heard was the brother of Jane Heard who was Samuel’s mother.   Elizabeth’s maiden name verified by an 1805 Census of Tattnall Co., Ga. which lists “Elizabeth Gilmore, nee Heard, widow of Samuel.” Samuel and Elizabeth had the following children:

On Nov. 23, 1828, Nancy Gilmore Martin signed statement     requesting that her brother, John H. Gilmore, act as     administrator of Julius Martin’s estate as she was left with a     large family ranging from a daughter and son of full age to a     suckling babe and was unable to take charge of the settlement.     (from “History of Henry Co.” by Mrs. Marvin Scott.)  By the     time Nancy’s estate was settled in 1844, many of her children     had died as shown above.

He had land in Early, Baker, Dooley in Georgia and Henry Co., in
Alabama.  He was a planter.  John was in Early Co., Ga. as early as
1822 where he was Justice of the Inferior Court.  He was Judge of the
