Grindall
Creek land grants:
Richard Smith's 2000 Ac. 1706
patent occupied the fork between the the Tarr and Tranter's Creek, stretching
along the Tarr about 3 miles, and along Tranter's Creek to the elbow west
of Latham. Smith's land passed to John Porter
in 1718, to John's son Joshua Porter, to John Lillington,
son-in-law of John Porter and husband of Sarah Porter, to John Alexander
Lillington, son of John and Sarah Lillington. John
Holland
sold 1700 Ac. of it to William Speir for £580, 9 Nov 1761.
(Thomas Williams's 27 Apr 1756 patent joined Tranter's Creek, Mr.
Pilkington, and Holland's line). I think 1000 Ac. was sold
by John Lillington to Seth Pilkington, along with Lillington's 5 Apr 1720
patent; and was left by Seth to Winifred Lillington.
Touching Grindal Creek's left (aka North or
East) bank:
-
Seth Pilkington's 1739 patent
for 640 Ac. stretched from Grindal Creek to Tranter's Creek, touching
Richard Smith's 1706 patent; it was half a mile high and 2 miles wide.
500 Ac. was sold, to Elias Hodges
in 1740, who sold part to John Hodges, and part to Henry Hodges 1 Jul 1763.
-
John Vernan's 500 Ac. 1739 patent also stretched from one creek to the
other, above Pilkington's 1739 patent. Vernan's patent is said to
adjoin Pilkington's, even though it was dated 6 days earlier.
-
William Cannon, 11 Mar 1740, 150 Ac., 'near George Mayo'. I doubt
there was a George Mayo. George Moye's patents were both S. of Grindal;
perhaps this was across the creek from Moye's 1738 400 Ac. patent.
-
William Casson, 11 Mar 1740, 200 Ac.
-
Simon Jones, 20 Apr 1745, 100 Ac.
-
Thomas Barker of Chowan County, 30 Nov 1753, 240 Ac. in the fork of Grindell
Creek and Crommy's branch.
-
Mrs Elizabeth Smith, 22 Jul 1758, 164 Ac.
-
Jacob Moore, 28 Feb 1759, 640 Ac. Joining Pugh’s line.
-
Walter Bryant, 28 Mar 1760, 520 Ac.
-
James Barrow, 22 Sep 1760, 278 and 1/2 Ac. Joining Elizabeth
Smith, Robert Daniel.
-

-
Benjamin Bowers, 22 Sep 1760, 223 Ac., joining Job Williams.
-

Island on the N. side of Grindell Creek
-
Capt William Speir, 20 Feb 1761, 249 Ac. on both sides of Grindall Creek,
joining Smiths line.
-
Joseph Whitfiel, 28 Feb 1761, 123 Ac. on the head of the Briary Branch
and Grindall Creek, joining Walter Bryant.
-
