Summary:
-
Richard, Elias, and John were the sons of Robert Hodges,
of the 1740 Bertie will. They were born roughly 1700-1710.
-
Roger: Robert Hodges of the 1740 Bertie will had a brother
Roger. The Roger who proved rights in Beaufort in 1744 may be this
brother, or if not then a nephew. In 1768 a Roger Hodges of
Craven bought land in Pitt from Eleazer Hodges, and promptly sold
half of it.
-
Elias: First of the sons to move to Beaufort, he bought 520 Ac.
in 1740, and is probably the Elias Hedges who proved rights June 1745.
He is not in the 1755 tax list. His son Benjamin died before he did,
about 1761, leaving minor children. They were still minor when Elias
died, about 1766, so in '67, Wm. Watkins
was confirmed as administrator of the estate of Benjamin Hodges,
with Robert Salter and John Hardee as securities.
-
John Hodges, son or Robert Hogges - born roughly 1700-1710
-
John Hodges, son of John, son or Robert Hogges.
Buys 100 Ac. NS Tar in 1750, adjoining his fathers large tract - sells
it in '56. In '52 buys the plantation he lives on, 140 Ac.
SS Tar - sells it to brother Howell in '56. Is in '55, '62,
and '63 tax. The '64 tax has an Isom Hodges Jr. which may be
he. In '61 buys 400 Ac. or more from Folsom and Cannon; in
'62 sells 200 Ac. of the Folsom land to Edmund Kennedy, and in '64 buys
the same 200 Ac back. In '62 sells 50 Ac. of Cannon land to
Stephen Munden. In '70 buys 170 Ac. NS Grendal from Henry Couper,
and in '78 sells 150 Ac. of it to John Jordan. In Mar '79 sells
the Folsom land to Nathan Cherry. In May '79, as a resident of Washington
Co. NC, he gives POA to his brother Howell to sell 150 Ac., the land where
John formerly dwelt. Howell sells in '80 to Isaac Carrell.
-
Benjamin: patents in '45 along Grindal, is in the '55 tax, carries
chain in '58, but is not in the '62 nor '63 tax lists. In '72, Eleazar
Hodges, son of Benjamin, sells Benjamin's '45 patent. In '68,
Eleazar sold land owned by Elias Hodges, and is identified as the
heir of Elias. So Eleazar was probably the son of Benjamin,
who was the son of Elias. Eleazar was in the household of Elias in
'62. In '62, Elias is administrator of Catherine Hodges estate,
and Catherine was probably the wife of Benjamin; that Benjamin was not
administrator suggests he had died, probably before the '62 tax.
-
Richard: buys land in 1741, Sells it in '49. Dies probably
about 1751 owning land SS Tar aquired at unknown date; his will probated
16 April 1752 mentions wife Sarah, and children
John,
Henry,
and Sarah Hodges. Widow Sarah and son John moved
to South Carolina. Henry appears in SC at some point. John
sells his legacy in 1752. The John, Sr. and Henry hodges
who appear in the 1755 tax living with John McGlahon are not I think, these
brothers, but Richard's brother John and John's son Henry.
Henry may be the Henry Hodges who appears starting in 1755.
-
Joseph: a chain bearer in '52.
