and Susannah
Albritton, Henry | man 16+; 3 boys 0-16; 2 females | 1790 census
b. 1748, Son of James

Albritton, James | 3 men 16+; 2 boys 0-16; female; 8 slaves | 1790
census
James b. ~ 1754 son
of Thomas and Margaret, wife Lidia Travis. No children known, so
two boys unaccounted. 2 other men could be James' brothers; he had
four, aged 30 to 40. These 3 James could easily be mixed up.
Albritton, James | man 16+; boy 0-16; 4 females; 4 slaves | 1790 census
James b. 1761 son of
Peter and Susannah, wife's name unknown. Son, James C., age

Albritton, James | man 16+; female; 3 slaves | 1790 census
James, b.1735, married
Mary Arnette.
Albritton, Peter | 4 men 16+; boy 0-16; female; 4 slaves | 1790 census
Peter b. 1741, son of

~17, and Jonothan ~19. Peter and Susannah had no daughters.
Sons William, ~ 30, and James, ~29, have their own households in the census.
Son Samuel, ~31, is not in the census. There should be 2 boys younger
than 16, Peter ~14 and Luke, ~12. The fourth man is unexplained.
Perhaps Peter was counted as being 16.
Albritton, William | man 16+; boy 0-16; 3 females | 1790 census
William
b. 1760 son of Peter & Susannah. Wife Elizabeth,
dau. Cloey. One boy & one female not accounted for, presumably
other children.

Albritton, James | also in household: George Albritton | 2 | 1763 tax
list
Albritton, Peter | only 16+ male | 1 | 1763 tax list
James b.

~19, and Peter ~21, are neither living at home nor taxed anywhere in Pitt
County in 1762; in 1763 George is at home and Peter is in a separate household
(1762 & '63 tax named every free male over 16, not just heads of households.)
Albritton, James | | 1 male 16+ ; 1 slave | 1762 Pitt tax list
Albritton, James Jr. | only 16+ male | 1 | 1763 tax list
Son of James

Albritton, Mathew | | 1 male 16+ | 1762 Pitt tax list
Albritton, Mathew | only 16+ male | 1 | 1763 tax list

Re: Joseph Asbell, 1790, Pitt, NC Posted by: Bill Harvey
February 28, 2001
This Joseph Asbel(l) is the one my grand-aunt has identified
as the father of Aaron Asbell b. 1800 in NC. (my gr-grandfather)
Her family history is very skimpy on Asbell ancestry beyond Aaron
but she does state that Joseph Asbell took the oath of Allegiance
to the Colonial Cause at Kingston, Lenoir Co., NC, on 3 May 1778.
She notes that Joseph was found on the 1790 Pitt
Co., NC census as was a William Bonner who later conveyed land and
moved to Granville Co., NC with his brother Thomas Bonner.
She also states that William Bonner later received
4 land grants in Hickman Co., KY and moved there abt 1828 with his
family and was accompanied by Aaron Asbell, son of Joseph. Aaron Asbell
married Elizabeth Bonner (dau. of William) in Hickman Co., KY in 1830.
Sandy Hodges,
Elisha and John Asbill were the sons of
Aaron & Nancy Ann (Belcher)
Asbill
Aaron & Nancy Ann had 8 children:
1) Susannah Asbill b 1774 prob Bertie Co,
NC
m Nathaniel Burton
2) Nancy Asbill b 1778 prob Bertie Co, NC
m Josiah Todd
3) Penelope Asbill b 1780 Bertie Co, NC
m 3 times--Loveless,
Williamson & Toney
4) John Asbill b 3 Nov 1781, Bertie Co, NC
m 1807, Abigail
Frederick in Edgefield, SC
3 children;
1) Elizabeth Asbill m Theophilus
Pierce;
2) Bryant Asbell 1/m Sarah Denson
(no
children); 2/m Sophia Asbill (10 children)
3/m Sarah Andrews
(4 children); 3) John
Asbill, Jr--know little about him
5) Lewis Asbill ca 1782 Bertie Co, NC; m Mary
Satcher - 11 children
- among them Sophia
who was
2nd wife of Bryant Asbell above
6) Elizabeth J. Asbill b 27 Oct 1783, Bertie
m E. W. Browning
7) Elisha Asbill b ca 1785, Bertie Co, NC
1/m ca 1903, Celia
? near Edgefield SC
Elisha & Celia had 5
children: Alfred, Elinder,
Anson, Mary, John
W,
2/m 17 Apr 1828, Phebe Harris
Elisha & Phebe had 3
children: Martha,
Andrew
W., and Julia Ann
8) Jarvis Asbill b ca 1794, Bertie Co, NC
m Frances DeSaussure 8 children
Aaron & Nancy Ann moved from Bertie Co, NC, and arrived in Edgefield
Co,
SC, Christmas Day 1799.
Brothers John and Elisha moved to Twiggs Co, GA, after their father
Aaron died in 1814. Elisha & Celia moved there in 1816, and
John &
Abigain followed the next year. There are several sources that
can be
found in the Washington Memorial Library in Macon, GA, including a
copy
of Elisha's will.
My wife, Hilda Jernigan Grimwood, descends from brothers
John and
Lewis Asbill (Bryant m 1st cousin Sophia). We have put together
2
editions of "Asbell Connections." The first edition
is in the Macon
Library. The revised edition is not. The latter contains many
revisions
to the Elisha Herring family, as his son Anson has many descendants,
among them members of the Leatherman family that responded to your
posting. Anson & Rhoda (Tucker) Asbill's 4 child was Nancy A. Asbill
-
1/m Marshall Leatherman; 2/m James Galloway.
Believe this may provide the identity of John and Elisha Asbill of
Twiggs County, GA. I don't know why children of John and Elisha
started
spelling the name "Asbell," but some did in both cases.
I rather enjoyed the exercise
Best regards, Jim Grimwood

Gleanings
William
Beaman witnessed deeds in Pitt County circa October 1763 for Joseph Jolley
senior (Book B, page 418) and in November 1773 for
Robert Hodges (Book L, page 36).
He was on the 1762 list of taxables for Pitt County, reported one white
poll and no blacks (Journal of North Carolina Genealogy, #56, Vol. XIV,
#4, Winter 1968, page 2212). He was still in Pitt County in 1786,
on the tax list in Captain Robert Hodges' District (page 2), one adult
male age 16-60 and one female over 60 years (Register, State Census of
North Carolina, page 137). William Bumam (sic) was enumerated in
the 1786 state census in Duplin County in Captain Bowden's District (page
3), with eleven free white individuals in his household. His name
which looks like Bumam on the original tax list, has been transcribed as
Beeman. Whether William was related to the other three Beaman men
in the county is a matter of conjecture. (Where did he go later;
incl as one of 3 bros).

Summary:
-
Sarah and Edward: their wills, 26 Jun 1733 and 10 Jun 1729, show
sons: Edward, Dennis, Henry, John, David, and William. Daus.: Margaret,
Sarah Woodward, Jene or Jane, Mary, Olif, and Ruth.
-
Jane: married William Cason.
-
David: had land before '40 south of Tarr on Juniper run; patents
more in same place in '40 and '45; buys land on the south bank of the Tarr
from Robert Callahan in '52. Land passed to 'his son Edward'
in '56. David is not in '62 nor '63 tax list, but a David witnesses
in '63 and '78, and land adjoined David Cannon in '63 and '71. All
land south of Tarr. Neighbors: John Mills, Simon Burney, James Shields,
John Simpson, Robert Hardee, David Kenion.
-
Dennis: buys a slave in '53; patents land south of Tarr (south of
Swift Creek) in '62 and '63, and is in tax list for '62 (owning 4 slaves)
and '63. In '67 he buys 120 ac. from Henry Cannon of Craven.
In '77 and '84, he sells land to Dennis Jr. (presumably his son)
and his son Lewis. In '82 he patents 400 ac. with Lewis and
Dennis Jr. as chain bearers. Witnesses in the '77 to '84 period
incude John, Elizabeth, Furna, and Henry Cannon. No Dennis in '90
census.
-
Edward son of David: An Edward who is the son of David got land
in '56 from David, which he sold to Matthew Albritton in '60; this land
was probably south of the Tarr. By '77 Edward, the son of David,
was living in Craven County.
-
Edward: In '61, land north of the Tarr is adjoining Edward Cannon
- this is probably not the son of David but his uncle, the son of Edward
and Sarah. The land is probably that patented by William Cason
in '40, which later was sold to John Hodges. No Edward in '62 nor
'63 tax list. An Edward witnesses a Grindal Creek deed
in '85, and is in the '90 census, with a large family and two slaves. No
Cannons in the '86 partial census, which included some Grindal Creek families.
-
George: patented land north of Tarr, along Grindal Creek, in '45
and '61. In '63 but not '62 tax list. Bought land along Grindal from
Thomas Moore in '79. Patented land in '83 in unknown location.
Shadrack
Cannon was a chain bearer. Patenting in '45 makes him the same generation
as the children of Sarah and Edward, but he is not in their wills; if he
is a grandson, he is perhaps the son of Edward or William, whose land like
his was along Grindal Creek. No George in '86 nor '90 census.
-
Henry: In '63, William Mitchell and his wife Mary, of Duplin County,
give land to Mary Cannon, who was probably their daughter. Mary and
husband Henry Cannon, also of Duplin, promptly sell the land, which seems
to have been near David Cannon's land south of the Tarr. In '63 he
also patents land, which in '67 he sells to Dennis Cannon; in '67 he is
from Craven County. He witnesses in '68, '75, and '77.
In '79 Henry of Craven buys over 300 acres in Pitt, all along Swift Creek
south of Tarr. Some Henry is in the 1790 census.
-
John: Land south of Tarr adjoined his in '55. He is in the
'62 and '63 tax lists. Bought land in '63, and '68, on south bank
of Tarr River. Bought land next to his in '71 and sold it in '77.
Sold to Thomas Cannon in '77, and bought from Samuel Cannon in '81.
In '82, '83 and '88, he sold to his sons Caleb, Thomas, and Furnifold.
Furney and Thomas Cannon but no Caleb nor John in '90 census.
-
Nathaniel: sells land in '75 that he got in '74; it was only £5.
In '78 he buys 250 Ac. from Pearson Tuten and 100 from David Mills, total
price £280. In '79 he sells it all back to Pearson Tuten,
total price £520. All land south of Tarr, close to David Cannon.
He is in the 1790 census with a large family and nine slaves.
-
Samuel: patents land in '62, south of Tarr, and is in the '62 and
'63 tax lists. In '71, he patents land. In '77 and '82
he sells it all off, some to John Cannon. In '82 he is from South
Carolina, and he is not in the '90 census.
-
William: patents land north of Tarr in '40 and '45.
Bought land in '62, and was in the '63 but not the '62 list. Neighbors:
George Mayo, Ebenezer Folsom, William Harris, Samuel Meares, William Baldwin,
and William Proctor. By '70 his 150 Ac. 1740 patent (adjoining Robert
Daniel) was sold by Henry Cooper to John Hodges. The '45 patent passed
by unknown means at unknown date to John Hatton. A William Cannon
was in the '90 census.
