A list of Taxables Beaufort County 1755
His Majesties Colony of North Carolina
This tax was imposed on white males of 16 years or over, and on blacks of 12 years or over, free or slave, male or female.   Those listed as `free negroes' are not counted in the `blacks' column, but are included in the `total' column; some entries not specified as 'free negroes' were also counted in this way - perhaps these were also Africans.   In a few cases, mostly rich men, the number given is fewer than the names listed; there may have been a tax exemption of some kind.

Notes on the transcription:  except for the semicolons separating names, and the line numbers, I have tried to keep to the spelling and punctuation of the original.   Question marks ? and underscores __ represent what I couldn't read.
