Mackinac Island Tour 1992

In 1992, my mother and I took a trip to Mackinac Island together, and this seems to be the first year I extensively took pictures. Even so, I STILL was not a very good photographer, and the subject of interest in many of my shots seems to be...my thumb. ^_^ Well, at least I got out of town this time around! Thus the selection of sights to see is somewhat bigger.

It was rainy this year.

There are 50 scanned pictures available from this tour. Nineteen are presented here. To view all available photos, please see this album. (Be aware that the page may take a while to load.)

One of my favorite shots ever, this here is a horse carriage waiting outside Marquette Park and Fort Mackinac. It's a wonder I wasn't run over trying to take this shot. ;)

Dwightwood Spring, on the east side of the island. The East Bluff has many hidden springs all up the hillside and when it's still enough, you can actually hear them trickling (as I did for the first time ten years later, in 2002). Dwightwood, named for Dwight Hulbert Wood, a man who sacrificed his life for his brother, is one of the more well-known and accessible springs, but it--and all of the others--are not safe for drinking. They have a water fountain in town for that. :)

My mother standing at the start of Spring Trail, which is a steep little trail leading way up the bluff to Arch Rock. Take this if you like a steep, scenic, here-comes-my-acrophobia-again trail. Take Arch Rock Road, Rifle Range Road, or Leslie Avenue from inland if you prefer something a little more...level. :)

The parking lot/rest area at Arch Rock. Arch Rock is possibly the island's most well-known and recognizable natural landmark, and in terms of landmarks period it's probably up there with the Grand Hotel. As such there's a nice restroom and picnic area for you to take a break should you wish. These carriages were full of tourists who rode up to the rock rather than walked, and were going to take the carriages back down.

Arch Rock offers a FANTASTIC view of the East Bluff and Lake Shore Road from way up high. This is a shot you'll find echoed in several of my later tours, so make sure to take notice of the state of Lake Huron! The water level changes every year, and it's kind of interesting to see how different it looks over the passage of time.
