Rings: "I give you this ring as a token and pledge of our constant faith and abiding love."
Jennifer's Poem to Jack
"Marriage"
[written by Days producer Maura Penders]
Now we will feel no rain
For each of us will be shelter to each other
And now we will feel no cold
For each of us will be warmth to each other
Now there is no loneliness
We are two bodies, but there is one life before us and one home
When evening falls, I'll look to you and there you'll be
And I'll take your hand and you'll take mine
And we'll turn together and we'll look to the road we travelled to reach this
The hour of our happiness
It stretches far behind us, and our future lies ahead
A long and winding road where every turning means discovery
Old hopes, new laughter, shared tears
The adventure has just begun
Jack's letter to Jennifer
Dear Jennifer,
In the past few days I've been something that I've rarely been at any other time in my life. Silent. But you're at least partly to blame. From the day we met you've surprised me, challenged me, and engaged me in a way that no other human being ever has. And I've never been able to tell you what that meant to me. But today of all days I have to find a way. Before I knew you, I wasn't living, I was waiting and hoping. Because even though I've lived my life in a gray and soulless city, I've always known that somewhere in the heart of it there is a wall and then there is a door and if you're lucky enough to have the key and you're lucky enough to get inside, you'll be about as close as any of us are ever going to get to the Garden of Eden.
2003 Wedding Vows ~ Back to Top
[Scripted Vows, per Soap City]
MINISTER: Now are we ready for the vows?
JACK: The word is eager.
JENNIFER: Me, too. I'm very eager to be your wife again, Jack. I come to you this time, with more than love in my heart. I come with patience and my pledge to be kind to my husband. I won't be keeping score this time around. I won't be boastful or conceited, I won't demand my own way. Instead I'll be generous of heart and quick to forgive. Sound too good to be true? It's not. We trust each other now, Jack, and that's the strongest foundation a couple can have. I promise to build on that trust, so that together we can endure whatever comes our way.
JACK: (Bursts) I love you.
JENNIFER:I love you, too, Jack, so much… and here's a promise from the bottom of my heart. My love for you will never come to an end.
(ON Jack, deeply moved by Jennifer's heartfelt vows)
JENNIFER: (cont'd) Jack, I promise to love you for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, forsaking all others. Only death can part us now.
JACK: Jennifer, I promise to love you, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, forsaking all others. Only death can part us now.
MINISTER: Jennifer, Jack would now like to speak his vows to you in his own words.
JACK: I'm a writer, so I know how important words are. But let's face it, words can be so easy to say, but awfully hard to live up to. The first time around, I bailed on my vows to you, Jennifer. Not this time. This time, I'm following through. I'll spend every day of my life loving you, Jennifer, cherishing you, thanking God for this second chance to prove my commitment to you and to our marriage.
(TAKE: the minister, blessing the rings)
MINISTER: The perfect circle of a ring symbolizes eternity, while gold is a symbol of all that is pure and holy. As you give these rings to each other, our prayer is that your love will be the same, pure and eternal. May the Lord God bless these rings, symbols of your marriage. (He then hands the rings back to Jack and Jennifer. ON Jack and Jennifer as they begin the exchange of rings)
JACK: Jennifer, I give you this ring in token and pledge of our constant and abiding love. (Jack lovingly places the ring on her finger)
JENNIFER:(Very emotional) Jack, I give you this ring in token and pledge of --
(Jennifer is suddenly overcome with emotion. Jack smiles down at her encouragingly. Abby moves closer to Jennifer)
ABBY: I'll say it with you, Mom.
ABBY/JENNIFER: Our constant and abiding love.
The Proposals ~ Back to Top

The storyline: Jack does not know that Jennifer was raped by Lawrence Alamain, Frankie has become Jennifer's roommate
The quote: "With love's light wings did I o'er perch these wall, for stoney limits cannot hold love out, and what love can do that dare's love attempt." - Romeo & Juliet
The proposal: "Would you, Jennifer Horton, in your stubborn and feisty ways, continue to go.... out on ledges for and with me? Will you continue to surprise and delight and make me feel... Will you be my wife? Will you marry me?"
The answer: "After everything that's happened, I don't even know who I am anymore. There's only one thing that I'm sure of and that's that I love you very much, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. But I'm just not ready to start the rest of my life yet."
#2: Here Comes Santa Claus... - Christmas 1990
The setting: The chimney/fireplace; Jennifer's living room;
The attire: Jennifer - blue robe; Jack - Santa Claus outfit, white beard
The storyline: Jack is afraid of losing Jennifer to Frankie, he still does not know she was raped
The proposal: "Why should she marry him? Let me count the ways. An immodest proposal of Mr. Jack Deveraux. Reason one, he loves you and reason two, you love him. And reason three, you wanted to - no, you'd do just about anything for each other but you already figured that out. Now you see, now under the normal circumstances
Santa wouldn't be here asking questions for Mr. D but apparently he woke up in a kind of cold sweat last night and he was kind of worried that he was losing you. So to sum up this incredible offer of work and adventure and growth and stimulation for as long as you both shall live, I'll even throw in a promise to do everything in his power to deserve someone - someone as you."
The answer: "I love you, Jack. And I want to marry you. You know I want to marry you."
The outcome: Jack broke off the engagement not even a month later when Jennifer slapped him and called him a rapist, envisioning Lawrence. Jennifer still wasn't ready to tell Jack she was raped by Lawrence, and so Jack ended things believing she would never accept his past.

The storyline: Jennifer is preparing for her rape trial against Lawrence, and Jack is supporting her. Jack married Eve Donovan to get a share of her inheritance to save The Spectator.
The metaphor: Jack talks to Jennifer about the jade plant he gave her (that represents their relationship), about how it needs natural rain water to be healthy; inside the plant is hidden the engagement ring
The proposal: "I was hoping we could be a little more creative about this but you know, when it comes to this sort of thing, even though I've been through it many, many times, it's just the question and the answer. And the question is - upon my, well Eve's and my release from the bonds and I do mean the holy bonds of matrimony - once again, will you be my wife?"
The answer: "I don't believe in half-hearted commitments. When I marry you I want to give myself you totally. And I can't do that yet. I just can't do that right now..." "I want you to be sure that you know how I feel, okay. My future is with you. And there isn't anything that's going happen in that courtroom that can change that. But the thing is I can't start a new life until I get through this. I mean you can understand that can't you?"
#4: Just a Formality - June 1991
The setting: The courthouse
The attire: Jennifer - a polka-dot blue dress; Jack - a suit

The proposal: "My whole life, I have only loved one man, and that love has been tested over and over and over. But I think it’s the tests that have made us stronger. And you’re the man that I love, and I want to be your wife again. So... Jack Deveraux, will you marry me?”
The answer: "Miss Horton... yes. Yes, I will marry you."
Special Places ~ Back to Top
~ The Spectator: The newspaper where Jack and Jennifer met, became friends, fell in love, first (technically) kissed
~ Jack's mansion bedroom: Where the bed broke when Jennifer pounced him, where they both slept when he was protecting her, where their first break-up occurred (note on the bed table)
~ Steve's secret passage way: Where the first REAL kiss occurred (ie: mutual and expected)
~ Jennifer's loft: Where many working sessions and make-out sessions and everything else took place
~ The cave on the island: Where they first made love, where Jack first said "I love you"
~ The stateroom on the Loretta: Where Jennifer first said "I love you", where Jack gave in

~ Jennifer's room at Lawrence's villa: "Nobody is ever going to love you the way that I love you!"
~ The cabin in the woods: Where Jack took Jennifer after kidnapping her from her wedding to Emilio, and where he took her over a year later to get away from Lawrence before the trial
~ The set of Ask Dr. Love: Where Abby was conceived
~ The airplane runway: Where Jack brought Jennifer to scream at the airplanes
Symbols, Tokens, and Gifts ~ Back to Top
~ The shell ring: Jack made a ring out of a shell for Jennifer when they were stranded on the island during the Cruise of Deception. He gave it to her shortly after they made love, and Jennifer treasured it from then on. It was often something for her to gaze at as she cried during times when she and Jack were having problems or separated, and other times she looked at it and smiled.
~ The jade plant: After Jennifer told Jack that Lawrence raped her, he bought her a jade plant which ended up being a metaphor for their relationship. They often talked about how "the plant" needed nurturing and love and it would grow. Jennifer doted on it.
~ Jennifer's engagement ring: The engagement ring held much focus; first, before Jack proposed, he would look at it uncertainly. After their engagement was broken, Jack took the ring off of her finger, and gave it to Jo to keep. Jo gave it back to him before Jack and Jennifer left on their train trip, and he carried it into his pocket until losing it when they were lost in the snowy woods. He apparently found it, and hid it in the jade plant for Jennifer to find before he proposed for a third time.
~ Historical cufflinks: On Christmas Eve 1990, Jennifer gave Jack cufflinks. She explained the significance of them, that they had belonged to her grandfather who gave them to her father who gave them to her to give to the man she loves.
~ The hope chest: On Christmas Eve 1990, Jack presented Jennifer with a hope chest full of momentos from their relationship. Inside was a doll fireman and bride, along with a toy firetruck to represent when he kidnapped her from her wedding to Emilio. Also inside was a box of Lincoln Logs representing the cabin they stayed in, and a life preserver with "Loretta" written on it, for the cruise. Last inside was a note from Jack: "Now that this is finally empty, we can fill it up again with new memories and hopes for a wonderful future."
~ The watch: On Valentine's Day 2003, Jack gave Jennifer a heart-shaped watch and told her to take all the "time" she needed to heal from her ordeal. It took her about an hour, after which she proposed to Jack.
