The travels continue....

DIARY PAGES

March 2007

The recent reports from Cornwall have had many birders (myself included) dashing down south, Hayle Estuary being the prime location. Within two hours I had seen a stunning White-billed Diver, Franklins Gull and the long-staying Spotted Sandpiper. I also had brief views of the Eastern-race Lesser Whitethroat, although too brief for the camera. Like many I spent the second part of the day @ Padstow in search of the Gyr Falcon, sadly I left before it flew into roost. I feel a second visit will be needed. Well, I was lucky enough to make a second visit and thankfully got to see the Gyr Falcon briefly before it flew across the estuary - Fantastic Bird!!  I've also been lucky enough to see & film the Great grey Shrike @ Parkend, Forest of Dean, the Common Crane @ Cropredy, Oxon and the female Black-throated Thrush @ Buckton, West Yorkshire

February 2007

A nice start to the month, Little Bunting @ Amwell G.P's, Hertfordshire, on the 6th. On previous days the bird had been very elusive but thankfully the bird showed well on my visit. A very obliging Water Rail was an added bonus. I was glad the Glossy Ibis had been re-found, as it gave me the chance for a second visit. This time the bird was very close giving excellent views. A visit to Cambridge on the 21st gave me the opportunity to see the 8 Waxwings @ Orwell,  as always, they gave superb views.

January 2007

It's been a slow start this year, too much work and very bad weather are to blame. My first trip out was on the 10th to see the Red-Breasted Geese @ Donna Nook, Lincolnshire. The weather was gorgeous, for a change, and the geese showed very well. A trip to Norfolk was put on hold when news broke of an American Robin in West Yorkshire. After a nightmare journey I managed to catch up with the bird during the last hour of daylight. It showed superbly and I hope it stays long enough for a second visit. I finally decided to make the trip to South Wales for the Rose-coloured Starling and I was amazed at how well it showed. The bird favoured gardens next to the memorial garden and at times would show down to six feet. Another potential first for Britain - "Pacific Diver" @ Farnham G.P's, North Yorkshire will surely earn me the nickname -"Sick-note". .
